Conflict in the Gaza Strip in December 2008 and January 2009

On 27 December 2008, Israel launched massive air raids on Gaza, followed by a ground incursion on 3 January 2009; Hamas responded by firing rockets deep into Israel. The Israeli government said the operation, which resulted in the reported deaths of more than 1,100 Palestinians, was aimed at stopping increasingly frequent rocket attacks launched against southern Israel from Gaza.

On 8 January 2009, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution demanding for immediate Gaza ceasefire.

On 18 January 2009, Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire. Subsequently, Hamas stated that it would itself respect a ceasefire for one week to give Israel time to withdraw its forces from the Gaza Strip.
