Cartooning at the Academy

On May 3rd, 2012, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, the Swiss Foundation Cartooning for Peace paid tribute to cartoonists whose talent, contribution and commitment to the values of Tolerance, Freedom and Peace deserve to be recognized, encouraged and supported. The ceremony took place at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.

Antonio Cassese's Tribute Event on 23 April

On 23 April, the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights held an event to pay tribute to the late  Antonio Cassese, "the giant of international criminal justice", as UN Secretary General called him.

The event included a Round Table to launch his last edited book,  Realizing Utopia: The Future of International Law, chaired by Andrew Clapham and with the participation of Luigi Condorelli, Pierre-Marie Dupuy, Malcom Evans and Philippe Sands. During the evening, Paola Gaeta announced the launching of The Antonio Cassese Initiative for Justice, Peace and Humanity that will bring together a network of friends and admirers of the man in order to promote education and training in developing countries.

The human right of freedom of religion or belief is enshrined in several core human rights treaties as well as in the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief. It holds an important place on the agenda of the Human Rights Council, its mechanisms, treaty bodies and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief has been especially instrumental in promoting the adoption of measures to ensure the protection of this right.

Countering piracy: what are the rights and obligations of states and private security providers? (organised by the Academy)

Piracy and armed robbery at sea is costing the international community many billions of dollars each year at a time when resources are especially scarce. Public international law applicable to counter-piracy operations by states is both complex and fragmented. As well, while private security service providers are increasingly being used for the protection of vessels against piracy their rights and obligations under international law differ to those of states.
